Operations such as gastric bands and the gastric bypass have been shown to be highly effective in the battle against obesity.</p>
<p>There are a plethora of surgeons and companies now offering bariatric surgery and for many people the questions are where should I go and why should I go?  As well as UK based surgeons, a variety of companies are now offering surgery abroad. This can be in the EU but some are even promoting surgery as far away as India, the Philippines and Russia.</p>
<p>Many of the companies offering bariatric surgery abroad make promises of reduced costs, aftercare services, clinical expertise, and less chance of hospital acquired infections as advantages of having surgery outside the UK.</p>
<p>For potential patients these are very attractive claims, however how true are they?</p>
<p>Toni Russo, Streamline Surgical bariatric nurse consultant believes that in many cases the companies making these promises will not live up to them:</p>
<p>“There are many nonsensical claims made on some websites. They are often run by people with no bariatric knowledge whatsoever. Aftercare services can be in some cases little more than an email address answered by a secretary, not the dedicated care that a bariatric patient should receive.  The draw for many patients to travel abroad for surgery is the price, however in many cases the prices quoted don’t take into consideration hotels, flights, taxis and meals for the patient’s companion since few will travel alone.  Of course it’s important to also remember that costs fluctuate according to exchange rates. Some companies have no understanding of bariatric surgery and give out incorrect advice such as pregnant women needing gastric bands removing.  </p>
<p>For me one of the most worrying things is the impressions that many of these companies give of bariatric surgery being a quick fix.  Many of these companies do not acknowledge the behavioural changes that are needed and the commitment from the patient to work with their surgery for the rest of their lives.”</p>
<p>TV presenter and journalist Anne Diamond was very honest about her experience in Belgium and subsequent need for revision surgery in the UK. Her gastric band was placed too high during surgery which is a technique common with some European surgeons as they say it reduces the chance of band slippage which is a known complication of <a target="_blank" href="http://www.streamline-surgical.com/" title="Gastric Band Surgery">gastric band surgery</a>.</p>
<p>Pat, 60, travelled to France for a gastric band she describes her experience: </p>
<p>“The service was pretty good but no-one but the surgeon spoke English. The worst bit was the fact that there were no curtains between the beds and I was expected to undress in front of other patients and a visitor. When I complained the surgeon said that English people were prudish! It was very humiliating.  I have also found aftercare an issue.  Not having direct access to a support team in the UK has meant that my aftercare hasn’t been as good as I imagine it would have been should I have stayed in the UK.  Although there are some benefits to having surgery abroad, people really shouldn’t underestimate the importance of a good aftercare team.”

<p>Yet, we don’t have to continue living this way. We can simply stop rewarding ourselves with food. However, it may not be that simple. We will have to change our mindset—to develop alternative systems of rewards. While this may seem difficult at first, it can be accomplished in time.</p>
<p>Here are some ideas for rewards that do not involve food:</p>
<p>• Give yourself a day at the beach. This can clear your mind and can be wonderfully invigorating.<br />• Schedule some play time. Your play might involve tennis, video games, or blowing bubbles—whatever activity that will get your mind away from the daily routine.<br />• Go shopping at a dollar store. You won’t spend much, but you could pick up some tremendous bargains.<br />• Share some quality time with your dog or cat. Grab some pet toys and have some fun.<br />• Go to the cosmetics counter of your local department store and indulge in a makeover.<br />• Spend a day at a spa. While food itself isn’t bad, our expectations about food can be. The first step to ending a food addiction may be to recognize that food can no longer serve as our reward.</p>
<p>While it can be rough getting out of the food-as-reward habit, it is well worth the effort. If we no longer view food as the prize, we will organize our day differently. We’ll devote our mealtimes to food, and the rest of our day to something else. We will eat only those foods designed to help us stay healthy—and we’ll be in better shape as a result. </p>

<p>When watching movies or looking through a magazine, you can&#8217;t help but notice how perfect everyone looks. It is not shocking that so many people are taking extreme measures to lose weight. People are cutting out nutrition and replacing it with unhealthy habits just to shed a few pounds. Most people do not seem to understand the importance of healthy weight loss.</p>
<p>Choosing to lose weight by going on a quick fix weigh loss diet will only hurt you. You will end up eating only a minimal amount of one or two foods, and put yourself at risk of not meeting your daily nutritional needs. Not only will this put you at risk for dehydrating yourself, but it will also result in you gaining it all back twice as fast once your diet is over. Going on this kind of diet is a losing endeavor.</p>
<p>The best way to lose weight is not to go on a diet, but to change the way you eat. Healthy eating is a lifestyle change. You don&#8217;t eat right to lose weight, but you do it to make yourself feel better inside and out.</p>

<p>Avoid sugar: It is always healthy to avoid any kind of sugar in your diet. Eating it once in a while would be alright, but try to keep it to a minimum.</p>
<p>Changing the way you eat is just a part of the healthy weight loss regimen. Exercise is another important factor in staying fit. It will benefit you in ways you never imagined, not to mention keeping you motivated in your healthy new lifestyle.</p>

<p>Once you&#8217;ve dropped some weight then you can start weight training. Keep a daily routine of what you&#8217;ve accomplished during the week. Every week push yourself a little harder and keep setting your goal a little higher. A quick fat loss diet takes two things you need to focus on. The first thing is exercise which is 40%, the other 60% is diet.</p>
<p>The key to diet is eating healthy and eating more times a day. Snacks play an important role in weight loss. Snacks help keep your appetite under control. You&#8217;ll find yourself eating smaller portion meals since you don&#8217;t have that &#8220;starving&#8221; feeling. Replace breakfast with a diet/protein shake and make sure to have a snack in between breakfast and lunch.</p>
<p>Try adding some strength training to your workout several times a week to begin building muscle on your body. If possible do your strength training before you do any cardio so that you are still fresh and strong and can get the most out of your strength workout. Along with exercise you should eat a diet geared toward losing fat rather than losing weight. Most diets that are designed just for weight loss don&#8217;t provide your body with enough calories. Because of this your metabolism adjusts and slows down to compensate for the decreased calorie intake which actually makes it harder to lose weight. Not only that, but it makes it easier to gain weight back when you go off the diet.</p>
<p>Some ideas for snacks are almonds, a piece of fruit, celery with peanut butter, and etc. For dinner have a lean and green meal. Maybe have a piece of chicken or a lean piece of meat and 2 cups of greens. Don&#8217;t eat past 8p.m. and make sure you eat at least 3 hours before you go to bed. Make sure to only eat healthy food for a quick fat loss diet plan.

This is why focusing the first 6 to 8 weeks on this alone is so important. These weight loss strategies are designed to help you do just that in a manner that is not considered the &#8220;torture&#8221; part of dieting.</p>
<p>Phase Four</p>
<p>The easiest part of changing your eating habits is eliminating fast food restaurant meals! Yes, I am aware that for many that is torture in itself. When you really think about it, it is not the food that we cannot do without, it is the fact that we do not have to cook it that is the torture. The time has come to begin preparing what you put into your body yourself! Home cooked meals does not mean hours at the stove, for most that only means about 30-45 minutes to whip up a highly nutritious and tasty dinner once you reaclimate yourself to doing it again. This is usually the same amount of time spent in the car on the way home to your favorite spot, waiting in line and then the rest of the drive home.</p>
<p>For the next four weeks, NO FAST FOODS!</p>
<p>Those of you that are serious about losing weight will do this. Those of you that are not, probably will stop reading the rest of the &#8220;Easy Weight Loss Strategies&#8221; that will be published in the coming weeks. The reason for the four week time frame is to develop or should I say re-develop the habit of preparing your own meals.</p>
<p>What so many fail to understand is that what we are doing today is what we are teaching to our children. They become what we are, then as parents who soon become grandparents all of a sudden are pointing fingers at their children because they are feeding the grand kids the same poor diet that they were brought up on. How do we expect our children to cook anything when they have never been exposed to home cooked meals themselves?</p>
<p>This is the trend now for all the baby boomers who are now grandparents. Watching their children do exactly what they did, which looks very different now that they are observing from afar. This is more so now because our children must have two incomes to survive, so cutting corners is just a way of life. Doing so at the expense of how we feed our upcoming generations is going to have a huge impact on disease because a majority of it will be nutritionally related. Obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancers and so many more are starting to show themselves in younger and yournger people everyday!</p>
<p>Here we go..NO FAST FOODS for FOUR WEEKS! Are you up to the challenge?</p>
<p>Keep track of your calories, fat and fiber but now I am asking you to keep track of how much money that you DID NOT SPEND everytime you have the urge to hit the drive through on the way home from work! Subtract that amount from your grocery bill for the month and you will be way ahead in the wallet! Money that can be put towards savings, credit cards bills or college funds for your children or grandchildren.</p>
